Mining is a prominent part of Australia’s modern history – even the largest Australian mining company refers to itself, brashly, as ‘The Big Australian’. But the average person remains skeptical and, possibly, hostile, because the folk memory of mining is a litany of struggle, frustration, disaster and grief. Whether by digging into the earth or into the stock market, striking it rich usually has its consequences.
